Australia’s World-First Move: A Total Social Media Ban for Under-16s
While the world watches, Australia is about to undertake one of the most significant digital experiments of the 21st century. Starting December 10, 2025, the country will enforce a strict ban on social media access for all children under the age of 16. This "world-first" legislation marks a turning point in how governments regulate Big Tech and protect the mental health of the next generation.
What Does the Ban Entail?
The new law is sweeping in its scope. Major platforms - including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter) - are legally required to block access to young teens. The responsibility lies squarely on the tech giants, who face fines of up to $50 million if they fail to take "reasonable steps" to prevent underage users from holding accounts.
Notably, there are no penalties for the children themselves or their parents. The government has also carved out exemptions for services deemed essential for communication or education, such as WhatsApp, Messenger Kids, Google Classroom, and YouTube Kids. However, the algorithmic, infinite-scroll feeds that define modern social media are officially off-limits for Australian minors.
Why Now? The Mental Health Crisis
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described the ban as a necessary intervention to stop the "scourge" of cyberbullying and the deteriorating mental health of young Australians. Proponents argue that social media algorithms are designed to be addictive, trapping developing brains in cycles of dopamine hits, comparison, and anxiety. By raising the minimum age, the government hopes to give children their childhood back—encouraging them to spend more time playing sports, interacting face-to-face, and sleeping without the glow of a screen.
The Controversy and The Challenge
The ban is not without its critics. Digital rights groups and some experts argue that a blanket prohibition might drive teenagers to darker, unregulated corners of the internet. Others question the technical feasibility of age verification, fearing it could compromise the privacy of adult users who may have to scan IDs to prove their age. Despite the pushback, the Australian government remains firm: the risks of doing nothing, they argue, are far too high.
A Wake-Up Call for Adults
This historic legislation forces us to ask a difficult question: If social media is considered too dangerous for a 15-year-old, what is it doing to the rest of us?
Adults are not immune to the mechanisms that make these apps so addictive. We might not have a government stepping in to lock our screens, but many of us struggle with the same issues as the teenagers: fragmented attention, "doom scrolling," and the inability to focus on deep, meaningful work. We know we should put the phone down, but the apps are engineered to overcome our willpower.
Since no law is coming to save our attention span, we have to take control ourselves.
To truly overcome phone addiction and the impulse to scroll, start with small, intentional changes such as setting app limits, disabling non-essential notifications, or creating no-phone zones at home or work. However, often the most effective tool is one that creates a physical barrier.
Introduce Scrolly
Scrolly is a funny physical device (connected to the app) that helps people block distracting apps - like Instagram or TikTok - with a single tap. To unblock them, you simply tap again, adding a small moment of friction and mindfulness before diving back in.
It’s simple, but super effective for reducing screen time and regaining the focus necessary for Deep Work. Scrolly works seamlessly with the app to give you back control, one tap at a time. It turns the autopilot act of checking into a conscious decision.

Give the Gift of Focus This Christmas
With the holidays right around the corner, we're all looking for gifts that actually improve the lives of our loved ones. Instead of another gadget that demands their attention, why not give them something that helps them get it back?
Scrolly is the perfect, unique Christmas present for that friend, partner, or colleague who is always glued to their screen and complaining about not having enough time. Give them the gift of presence.
Ready to reclaim your brain or help someone else reclaim theirs? Don't wait.
